For all those of you who’ve enjoyed playing Scrabble, the news of it now allowing proper nouns might come as a disappointment. As I see it, it’s nothing more than a money-spinning venture.
Sure, change is the order of the world, but my biggest complaint is with the fact that, in trying to draw more children to the game, it will do nothing for how they learn newer words, spelling and make mental connections with words. When my brother and I were growing up, we’d play Scrabble together as a family activity, and learn so much while we played. (I’m sure this is true for most of us.) Our children these days read so little anyway, spending more time on individual activities like the internet and playing video-games. If classic games like these are dumbed down, our children will grow up not using their imagination and creativity that games like Scrabble inadvertently develop in us.
What’s next, Mattel? Scrabble that allows the u’s, r’s and 2morrow’s of sms language?
